NSCDC Special Squad Arrests Two Over Alleged Railway Infrastructure Vandalism in Bauchi

The Commandant General’s Special Intelligence Squad (CG’s SIS) of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has intercepted a criminal syndicate allegedly involved in the vandalism and illegal transportation of infrastructure belonging to the Nigerian Railway Corporation.

The operation led to the arrest of two suspects and the recovery of a large quantity of suspected stolen railway sleepers along the Bauchi-Kano Road.

According to the NSCDC, the operation followed a directive issued by the Commandant General, Ahmed Abubakar Audi, ordering the Special Intelligence Squad to relocate to Bauchi State to dismantle syndicates allegedly damaging and transporting railway infrastructure under the guise of legitimate contractors.

Acting on intelligence reports concerning the movement of vandalised railway materials from Tafawa-Balewa Local Government Area, operatives intercepted a Peugeot Boxer vehicle with registration number KMC-366-TE.

The vehicle was reportedly loaded with suspected vandalised railway sleepers believed to be heading toward Kano.

The suspects arrested during the operation were identified as Alzuma Yakubu, 65, who was driving the vehicle, and Ismail Muhammad, 32, described as the self-acclaimed owner of the recovered materials.

Both suspects, along with the vehicle and recovered railway infrastructure, are currently in custody as exhibits.

The NSCDC said the operation was initiated after concerns were raised by the Governor of Bauchi State over alleged attempts by criminal elements to hijack federal government railway contracts while engaging in illegal activities.

Following the concerns, Commandant General Audi reportedly directed the CG’s Special Intelligence Squad, led by Apollos Dandaura, to intensify operations across the Bauchi-Gombe corridor.

According to the squad commander, the suspects are assisting investigators with information aimed at uncovering a wider criminal network, including warehouses allegedly used to stockpile stolen railway materials before transportation across state lines.

The NSCDC reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Critical National Assets and Infrastructure nationwide and warned vandals and illegal scrap dealers that the Bauchi-Gombe axis would no longer serve as a safe haven for criminal activities.
