The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has raised alarm over what it described as a growing and dangerous level of public apathy towards the protection of Critical National Assets and Infrastructure (CNAI), warning that silence and indifference within communities often enable acts of sabotage and vandalism.
The Commandant General of the Corps, Ahmed Abubakar Audi, made this known during a presentation at the Strategic Intelligence Management Institute in Abuja. He stressed that no security system can succeed without the active support of the people it is meant to protect.
According to him, critical infrastructure such as pipelines, power installations, and communication facilities are located within communities, making residents the first line of defense through vigilance and timely reporting of suspicious activities.
He cautioned that when communities ignore early warning signs, minor threats can escalate into major security breaches with severe consequences for the economy and national stability.
The NSCDC boss reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to safeguarding national assets but emphasized that sustainable protection requires a shared responsibility between security agencies and citizens.
He also highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen inter-agency collaboration and intelligence sharing among security bodies to improve response to threats against national infrastructure.
Furthermore, he noted that government is working towards enforcing stricter penalties for offenders and ensuring faster administration of justice to deter acts of sabotage.
The Commandant General called for a national shift in mindset, urging Nigerians to move from indifference to active participation in protecting public infrastructure, stressing that safeguarding national assets is a civic duty essential to economic growth and national survival.
