Plateau Women Destroy Alcoholic Drinks in Protest Against Substance Abuse

A group of women from Dangguruk community in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau have staged a protest against substance abuse, seizing and destroying alcoholic beverages they blamed for fueling social problems within their community.

The women reportedly stormed shops in the area on Thursday, confiscating cartons and containers of alcoholic drinks before setting them ablaze. During the protest, they chanted slogans against the consumption of “koskolo” and “cheskela,” substances they said have contributed to rising cases of irresponsibility, family breakdown and other social challenges.

According to community members, the women expressed frustration over the impact of alcohol and substance abuse on families, particularly among husbands and young men in the area. They vowed to continue advocating against practices they believe are harming the social fabric of the community.

The incident has sparked discussions on social media, with many comparing the action to similar alcohol enforcement activities carried out by the Kano State Hisbah Board in Kano.

While supporters of the Dangguruk protest described it as a community-driven response to a growing social problem, others questioned whether citizens should take direct action against legally sold products without the involvement of law enforcement agencies or court orders.

The development has reignited broader debates about community-led morality enforcement, the role of local groups in addressing social issues, and the limits of such interventions within the framework of the law.

Observers note that the incident highlights growing concerns about substance abuse in several communities across the country, as stakeholders continue to call for stronger awareness campaigns, rehabilitation programmes and coordinated efforts to address addiction and its social consequences.

As of the time of filing this report, local authorities had not issued an official statement on the destruction of the alcoholic beverages.
