Shettima Pays Tribute to Tinubu’s Mother, Says Her Values Continue to Shape Nigeria’s Leadership

Vice President Kashim Shettima has paid glowing tribute to the late Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, mother of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing her as a remarkable woman whose influence extended far beyond her family and left a lasting impact on Nigeria.

Speaking on Sunday at the Annual Grand Prayer Session held in her honour at the National Mosque in Abuja, Shettima, who represented President Tinubu, said the late Iyaloja-General of Nigeria lived a life of service, compassion and leadership, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire generations.

According to the Vice President, Alhaja Mogaji’s leadership was reflected not in public acclaim but in the countless lives she touched and the institutions she helped strengthen throughout her lifetime.

He noted that the late matriarch played a significant role in shaping the values and leadership qualities of President Tinubu, describing her as a woman who instilled in her son the principles of service, courage and commitment to the common good.

“She taught that leadership is a trust and that public service should always place the welfare of ordinary people first,” Shettima said.

The Vice President recalled Alhaja Mogaji’s decades of service to traders and market women across the country, noting that she dedicated her life to protecting their interests and empowering them economically.

He said she transformed the marketplace into a platform for collective strength and gave voice to women whose contributions to society were often overlooked.

“She believed commerce was a service to humanity and worked tirelessly to ensure that the dignity and welfare of traders were protected,” he stated.

Shettima further described her as a woman who consistently stood with the vulnerable, mediated conflicts and supported those in need, earning the respect and affection of people from all walks of life.

Offering prayers for her repose, the Vice President asked Allah to forgive her shortcomings, reward her good deeds and grant her eternal rest in Paradise.

He also expressed confidence that Nigeria would overcome its current economic and security challenges through unity, prayer and collective commitment, assuring Nigerians that the administration remains focused on improving security, strengthening the economy and enhancing citizens’ welfare.

Earlier, the convener of the prayer session and Special Adviser to the President on Political Affairs and Other Matters, Ibrahim Kabir Masari, described the late Abibatu Mogaji as a woman whose life was devoted to serving humanity.

Masari disclosed that more than 250 hand-pump boreholes had been constructed across nine northern states in her memory, providing clean water to thousands of residents.

He also announced plans to establish the Abibatu Mogaji Islamic Centre in Abuja to promote Islamic scholarship, leadership development, science and technology education.

In addition, a modern Juma’at Mosque, along with residential quarters for its Imam and support staff, is expected to be built in Rigasa, Kaduna State, in honour of the late matriarch.

The event featured special prayers by prominent Islamic scholars for the repose of Alhaja Mogaji’s soul and for peace, unity, security and economic prosperity in Nigeria.

Among those in attendance were Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, Governor Mai Mala Buni, Governor Umar Namadi, former Governor Tanko Al-Makura, and the Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, represented at the occasion by Yahaya Abubakar.

Other dignitaries included senior government officials, ministers, traditional rulers and religious leaders from across the country.
