The research, published in the Personality and Individual Differences, revealed that reduced authenticity in relationships is closely associated with lower emotional intimacy—an important factor linked to commitment and trust.

The study was conducted by researchers Teodora-Elena Huțanu and Andrei Corneliu Holman of Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iași. Their findings indicate that individuals who suppress their thoughts, feelings, and personal identity within relationships are more likely to experience emotional disconnection, which can increase the likelihood of cheating.

According to the researchers, infidelity is often less about seeking a better partner and more about unmet emotional needs and the absence of genuine self-expression. When individuals feel unseen or unable to express their true identity, the resulting disconnect may push them toward seeking validation elsewhere.

The study emphasises the importance of creating open, judgement-free environments in relationships where both partners feel safe to express themselves fully. Experts say fostering authenticity and emotional closeness can serve as a protective factor against infidelity.

The findings contribute to a broader understanding of relationship dynamics, shifting the conversation from blame to deeper psychological factors that influence behaviour and long-term relationship stability.
