Troops Bust Kidnapping Syndicate in Imo, Arrest Suspect, Recover Ransom Proceeds
Troops of the 34 Artillery Brigade operating under Operation UDO KA, in collaboration with other security agencies, have disrupted a suspected kidnapping syndicate in Imo State, arresting one suspect and recovering ransom proceeds as well as a vehicle allegedly used in the crime.
The intelligence-led operation was conducted on 17 July 2026 in Obinwanne Umuaka, Njaba Local Government Area, following credible intelligence on the activities of the criminal network.
According to the Nigerian Army, troops carried out a cordon-and-search operation during which they recovered a bag believed to have been used to transport ransom payments. The bag was discovered abandoned in a nearby bush, suggesting that the ransom had already been shared among members of the gang.
Further exploitation of intelligence led security operatives to a residential building, where one suspect was arrested. A search of the premises resulted in the recovery of a black Lexus saloon car allegedly used during the kidnapping operation, several mobile phones, identity documents and ₦298,200 suspected to be part of the ransom paid by the victim’s family.
The Army disclosed that the rescued victim positively identified the suspect as one of those involved in the abduction.
Preliminary investigations further revealed that the suspect allegedly provided his vehicle to the principal suspect to facilitate the kidnapping and subsequently received a share of the ransom proceeds.
The suspect and all recovered exhibits have been handed over to the Department of State Services (DSS) for further investigation and efforts to apprehend other members of the syndicate, including the alleged kingpin who remains at large.
The Nigerian Army said the operation demonstrates the effectiveness of intelligence-driven operations and the strong collaboration among security agencies in combating kidnapping and other violent crimes across the South-East.
The Army reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining coordinated security operations aimed at protecting lives and property while dismantling criminal networks operating within the region.
