Troops Intercept Suspected Illegal Refined Diesel Worth Over ₦2.2 Million in Akwa Ibom

Troops of 2 Brigade Nigerian Army, operating under Sector 4, Operation DELTA SAFE, have intercepted a vehicle transporting suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), commonly known as diesel, during an anti-illegal oil bunkering operation in Akwa Ibom State.

The operation was carried out at about 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 26, 2026, along the Onna–Etinan Road, following credible intelligence and surveillance on the activities of a suspected oil bunkerer.

According to the Nigerian Army, the suspect was driving an Infiniti Jeep with registration number EPE 937 EY when he sighted the troops and attempted to evade arrest.

The troops immediately pursued the vehicle, prompting the suspect to abandon it and flee into the surrounding bush.

A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 40 nylon bags containing approximately 1,200 litres of suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), estimated to be worth ₦2,256,000.

The recovered petroleum products, along with the vehicle, were secured in accordance with the operational mandate of Operation DELTA SAFE for further investigation and necessary action.

The Nigerian Army confirmed that the operation was successfully executed without any casualties or security incidents.

The latest interception highlights the sustained efforts of troops under Operation DELTA SAFE to combat illegal oil bunkering, safeguard Nigeria’s critical oil infrastructure, and curb economic sabotage in the Niger Delta region.
