The President, the University of Ibadan Alumni Association (UIAA) Worldwide, Prof Saawua Nyityo has described former Chief of Army Staff cum erstwhile Nigerian Ambassador to Benin Republic, Lt-Gen Tukur Buratai (Rtd) as an indefatigable terrorists’ fighter.

Prof Nyityo made this statement at the 2nd Stanza 2023 Public Lecture held at the University of Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria, describing Gen Buratai as a household name in Nigeria who fought Boko Haram tirelessly and selflessly in the service to his fatherland.

He said, “We are honored today by an important visitation from the Sahel region in North East Nigeria. It is a visitation that will shine forth in days, weeks, and even years to come for goldfish they say have no hiding place. The more gold is burnt in the furnace, the better it shines forth.

“General TukurYusufuBuratai (rtd) is a household name in Nigeria today for his role in fighting Boko Haram and for channeling his energies and intellect in the service to his fatherland.

“This is the man that the Executive Committee has selected to kick start the celebration of 65 years of the existence of the University of Ibadan Alumni Association.”

According to Prof Nyityo, choosing Gen Buratai to present its Public Service Lecture on Public Service and the Imperatives for National Security in Nigeria, the UIAA affirmed that there was a strong connection between good public service delivery and national security.

The Association while stating its hallmark to link up worthy members of the Nigerian community to generate ideas and solutions to address societal challenges to move Nigeria forward, prayed God to grant the former army chief the enablement to contribute his own quota to the general wellbeing of the country.

“As an Association, the UIAA very warmly welcomes you and your entourage to this great citadel of learning, our alma mater, the University of Ibadan. Suffice it to state that the hallmark of our Association is not only to connect with our alumni alone but also link up with worthy members of the Nigeria community to generate ideas and solutions to address societal challenges to move our nation forward.”

Earlier in his paper presentation, Gen Buratai shed light on the prevailing discontent among Nigerians regarding politics and democratic governance, adding that the citizens of Nigeria perceive politicians and the political system as a failed mechanism for effective governance, fostering an environment of disillusionment and dissatisfaction.
