UK Court Acquits Former Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke of Bribery Charges
A Crown Court in Southwark, London, has acquitted former Nigerian Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, of all six bribery-related charges brought against her by British prosecutors.
The verdict followed a lengthy trial that began in January and concluded after more than 46 hours of jury deliberations, bringing to an end a high-profile case that stemmed from corruption investigations launched by UK authorities more than a decade ago.
Alison-Madueke, 65, who served as Nigeria’s Minister of Petroleum Resources between 2010 and 2015 under former President Goodluck Jonathan, faced five counts of accepting bribes and one count of conspiracy to commit bribery.
Prosecutors alleged that the former minister received luxury benefits in London from oil and gas industry figures seeking favourable treatment and lucrative contracts in Nigeria’s petroleum sector.
According to the prosecution, Alison-Madueke was provided with what was described as “a life of luxury” by individuals connected to the oil and gas industry in exchange for influence over contract awards.
However, the former minister consistently denied the allegations, maintaining throughout the proceedings that she neither accepted bribes nor exercised direct influence over the awarding of contracts.
Her defence team argued that the expenditures highlighted by prosecutors were legitimate expenses incurred during official engagements and were subsequently reimbursed by the Nigerian government.
During the trial, Alison-Madueke also rejected claims that she improperly benefited from her position, insisting that the prosecution had failed to establish any evidence of corrupt conduct.
After reviewing the evidence and hearing arguments from both sides, the jury returned not-guilty verdicts on all six counts.
The acquittal marks a significant development in one of the most closely watched legal cases involving a former senior Nigerian government official in the United Kingdom.
Alison-Madueke made history as the first woman to serve as Nigeria’s Minister of Petroleum Resources and also briefly held the position of President of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, becoming the first woman to lead the oil-producing bloc.
The case attracted international attention due to her prominent role in Nigeria’s oil industry and longstanding allegations of corruption that had followed her since leaving office.
With the acquittal, the former minister has been cleared of the bribery charges brought against her before the Southwark Crown Court.
