The United Kingdom has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening its defence and security partnership with Nigeria, with a focus on military cooperation, professional military education, technology transfer and institutional capacity building.
The commitment was reiterated when the newly appointed British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Pete Vowles, paid a courtesy visit to the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General OO Oluyede, at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.
During the visit, Vowles expressed appreciation for the longstanding political, diplomatic and military relations between both countries, describing defence and security cooperation as an important part of the UK-Nigeria bilateral relationship.
He reaffirmed his determination to sustain existing security initiatives and explore new areas of cooperation to address emerging regional and global security challenges.
The British High Commissioner also stressed the need to maintain a strong and mutually beneficial partnership that would support regional stability and strengthen Nigeria’s ability to tackle security threats.
In his response, General Oluyede highlighted the longstanding historical ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, noting that both countries had maintained a productive defence relationship over several decades.
He said the two countries had continued to work together to address shared security concerns and emphasised the need to sustain and expand existing areas of cooperation.
The CDS identified professional military education, technology transfer and institutional capacity building as key areas requiring continued collaboration.
He noted that existing defence agreements and training programmes had contributed to improving the professional competence and operational capabilities of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
Oluyede further stressed that continued cooperation with strategic international partners remained important to strengthening the Armed Forces’ ability to respond effectively to emerging security threats.
He added that such partnerships would also support greater self-reliance, institutional resilience and operational efficiency within the Nigerian military.
Both parties expressed optimism about the future of the UK-Nigeria defence and security partnership and reaffirmed their commitment to building on existing achievements while exploring additional areas of cooperation for mutual benefit.
