In response to Israel’s decision to shut down broadcaster Al Jazeera’s operations within its borders, the United Nations (UN) has strongly asserted the fundamental importance of press freedom.

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric, speaking from New York, emphasized the organization’s stance, stating, “We stand firmly against any decision to roll back freedom of the press. A free press provides an invaluable service to ensure that the public is informed and engaged.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that his Cabinet had unanimously voted to close Al Jazeera’s operations in the country. This move followed the approval of a new media law by Israeli lawmakers, widely dubbed the “Al Jazeera law,” granting the government authority to ban foreign broadcasters if they are perceived as a threat to state security.

Al Jazeera responded to the Israeli decision with condemnation, pledging to pursue “all avenues” available to safeguard its rights and protect its employees.
