US Lawmakers Demand Action: Nigeria’s CPC Status Could Be Reversed With Reforms

During a high‑stakes congressional hearing, U.S. Representative Chris Smith warned that Nigeria could be removed from the “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) list — a designation tied to grave religious freedom violations — if it takes concrete steps to address ongoing human rights abuses. The hearing focused on serious allegations of Christian persecution in Nigeria.

“Make no mistake, these ongoing attacks are based on religion … This ‘religious cleansing’ needs to stop, and the perpetrators be brought to justice,” Smith declared during his opening remarks.

Trump Escalates Pressure With Military Threat

The hearing comes amid growing tension after President Donald Trump ordered the Pentagon to prepare for possible military action in Nigeria, citing alleged extremist violence against Christians. Trump framed the situation as an existential threat to Christianity in Nigeria, warning of a “fast, vicious” military response if the government fails to act.

Many in Congress view his return to the CPC designation — first applied during his presidency — as a moral and diplomatic tool to force reforms. A group of 31 U.S. lawmakers recently praised him for making the move.

Rep. Huizenga Accuses Nigeria of Inaction

Also testifying was Congressman Bill Huizenga, who slammed the Nigerian government for “sitting back” while Islamist violence intensifies. He strongly criticized Nigeria’s delegation in Washington, arguing that they were downplaying the killings.

“It is Christians, moderate Muslims, and others who are being terrorized,” Huizenga said. He added that the Nigerian government needs to be held accountable with “verifiable conditions on U.S. aid.”

International Pressure and Nigerian Rebuttal

The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has long urged the re-designation of Nigeria as a CPC. According to their latest report, extremist groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP are operating with near-impunity, putting vulnerable Christian communities at risk.

In response, the Nigerian government has pushed back hard. In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected claims that Christians are specifically targeted, calling such accusations “misleading and false.”

What Happens Next?

  • Lawmakers like Smith are pushing for renewed pressure, calling for diplomatic, economic, and security leverage against Nigeria.
  • Others are advocating for sanctions on officials complicit in religious violence.
  • For Nigeria, the stakes are high: addressing U.S. demands could ease diplomatic pressure, while ignoring them risks further isolation and possible sanctions.
