World Bank: Over 817 Million People Lived in Extreme Poverty in 2024

A new report by the World Bank has revealed that an estimated 817 million people were living in extreme poverty worldwide in 2024, highlighting the continued challenge of reducing global poverty.

According to the World Bank’s Poverty, Prosperity and Planet Report 2025, the figure is based on a newly revised international poverty line, which reflects updated price data collected from more than 160 countries.

The report shows that Sub-Saharan Africa remains the region most affected, accounting for nearly three-quarters of the world’s population living in extreme poverty.

The World Bank noted that the revised estimates indicate the global poverty crisis is more severe than previously understood, with millions of people continuing to struggle to meet their basic daily needs.

Beyond the statistics, the report highlights the difficult realities faced by families forced to make painful choices between essential needs such as food, healthcare and education.

It also warned that progress in reducing poverty has slowed significantly since the COVID-19 pandemic, raising concerns that the global goal of ending extreme poverty by 2030 may no longer be achievable without stronger policy interventions and increased international support.

The World Bank called for renewed efforts to promote inclusive economic growth, expand social protection programmes and create sustainable opportunities to improve the living conditions of vulnerable populations worldwide.
