Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has distributed clean cookstoves and cooking gas cylinders to 7,500 primary school teachers and sanitation vanguards as part of efforts to reduce dependence on firewood, protect forests and promote environmental sustainability.

The governor announced the initiative on Thursday in Maiduguri during the official launch of the 2026 National Tree Planting Campaign, which targets the planting of four million trees across the state.

Under the programme, 5,000 primary school teachers and 2,500 sanitation vanguards of the Borno State Environmental Protection Agency received clean cookstoves and cooking gas cylinders.

Governor Zulum described tree planting as more than a ceremonial exercise, saying it represents a collective commitment to protecting the environment, securing the future of coming generations and promoting sustainable development.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to environmental restoration and climate resilience, noting that Borno, as a frontline state in the Sahel region, continues to face serious environmental challenges, including desert encroachment, rising temperatures, dwindling vegetation and land degradation.

According to him, the challenges pose threats to agriculture, food security, water resources and the livelihoods of millions of residents.

Zulum stressed that environmental restoration remained a key component of the state’s rebuilding and recovery agenda, noting that sustainable peace and development could not thrive in a degraded environment.

He commended the Federal Ministry of Environment for selecting Borno to host the national campaign, describing the decision as recognition of the state’s resilience and ongoing transformation.

The Minister of Environment, Alhaji Balarabe Lawal, praised the initiative, describing it as a practical approach to combating desertification and reducing pressure on forest resources.

He said Borno State was setting a commendable example in environmental sustainability.

Similarly, the Director-General of the National Agency for the Great Green Wall, Mr. Saleh Abubakar, called for sustained investment in afforestation and clean energy programmes to combat climate change, protect livelihoods and strengthen food security in vulnerable communities.
