In a press conference today, the Military Veterans Welfare Committee, led by Air Commodore Isaac Olufemi Oguntuyi (rtd, mni), highlighted pressing concerns regarding the implementation of security debarment allowance, pensions, and other benefits for both serving and retired soldiers and officers of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
The committee acknowledged the upcoming Armed Forces Remembrance Day, a day dedicated to honouring fallen colleagues, emphasising its symbolic importance to the veterans’ community in ensuring the sacrifices made are not in vain.
Air Commodore Oguntuyi expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the administration’s commitment to the welfare of the Armed Forces and military veterans. However, he underscored the need to address lingering issues affecting veterans’ livelihoods and morale.
Key concerns raised in the submitted report to the Honourable Minister of Defence include seeking bulk payment and equitable distribution of the Security Debarment Allowance (SDA), reviewing pensions disparities within ranks, and advocating for upward reviews of salaries and pensions due to economic challenges.

The committee highlighted the need for a realistic and fair template for the SDA, suggesting a base year of the 2012 military pay scale for more equitable payments. They also urged for an overhaul of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to better cater to veterans’ health needs.
Addressing the issue of post-service benefits, the committee stressed the importance of implementing benefits in accordance with Harmonised Terms and Condition of Service (HTACOS) and advocated for the establishment of the Veterans Federation of Nigeria (VFN) to address grievances collectively.
Air Commodore Oguntuyi called for urgent intervention from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. “We urge Mr. President to consider approving bulk payment of the remaining SDA, addressing disparities in pensions, and implementing new salary structures to bridge rank differentials.”
In conclusion, the committee expressed confidence in the government’s commitment to addressing veterans’ welfare needs and urged members to remain patient while believing in the resolve of the committee to represent their interests effectively.
The announcement has sparked anticipation among the veterans’ community, awaiting further government actions in response to their pressing concerns.
