The Nigerian Army (NA) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) have reaffirmed their commitment to a strengthened partnership aimed at promoting peace and stability throughout Nigeria. This collaboration seeks to provide security, humanitarian assistance, and uphold international humanitarian law (IHL).

This commitment was made, yesterday, January 31, 2024, during a meeting between the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, and the ICRC delegation in Nigeria, led by Mr. Yann Bonzon, at the Army Headquarters in Abuja.
Mr. Yann, briefing the COAS, emphasised the ICRC’s dedication to providing humanitarian assistance in conflict zones globally, akin to its ongoing efforts in North-East Nigeria, where troops are engaged in counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations. He highlighted the successful collaboration with the Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) facilitated through a positive working relationship with the NA, urging its continuation.
In response, the COAS expressed appreciation to the ICRC for its unwavering commitment to providing humanitarian aid. He acknowledged the positive impact of these efforts in improving living conditions for conflict victims in affected areas.
Addressing the capacity building initiatives within the NA, particularly in the application of International Humanitarian Laws during operations, the COAS noted that “the NA has codified its protocols. These protocols now serve as teaching guides for NA personnel in all institutions, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of international best practices and expectations,” he said, commending the ICRC for its collaboration in training and medical assistance, among other areas.
The COAS pledged the NA’s commitment to further strengthening partnerships with the ICRC and other relevant organizations to provide relief and support to conflict victims, thereby expanding the frontiers of security and stability in the country.
