NDC Insists It Remains Registered, Dismisses Claims of Deregistration Ahead of 2027 Elections

By Comfort Pius, Jos

The Plateau State chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has declared that it remains a legally registered political party and will participate in the 2027 general elections, insisting that no court has ordered its deregistration.

Addressing journalists on Tuesday in Jos, the Plateau State Chairman of the NDC, Comrade Solomon Ndam, alleged that some political interests were using the judiciary to frustrate opposition parties ahead of the 2027 elections. He maintained that the party remains duly registered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Ndam recalled that the party secured a Federal High Court judgment on December 10, 2025, compelling INEC to register the NDC after what he described as a prolonged legal battle. According to him, the court ruled that the party had fulfilled all constitutional requirements for registration, after which INEC formally registered it.

He said the party subsequently embarked on a nationwide membership drive, claiming to have registered more than 13 million members across the country. He added that the NDC also conducted ward, local government, state and national congresses, as well as primary elections for State House of Assembly, House of Representatives, Senate, governorship and presidential candidates in line with the Electoral Act and INEC guidelines.

The state chairman, however, expressed concern over a Federal High Court judgment delivered in Lokoja, Kogi State, on June 26, 2026, which he alleged was obtained by a group known as the Peace Movement Party. He described the development as unlawful, claiming the group is neither a registered political party nor a recognised organisation.

Ndam disclosed that the NDC filed an appeal on June 29, 2026, alongside applications for a stay of execution and an injunction against the judgment, adding that the legal processes had been served on the Chairman of INEC.

He insisted that there is no court order directing the deregistration of the party and stated that INEC had already issued the NDC access codes to upload its candidates in accordance with the commission’s timetable.

According to him, the party commenced uploading its presidential candidate on June 29 and has until July 11, 2026, to submit the names of its National Assembly candidates, while governorship and State House of Assembly candidates are expected to be uploaded before July 17, 2026.

Ndam commended the INEC Chairman for what he described as professionalism in handling the matter and urged the commission to remain impartial throughout the electoral process.

Speaking on the 2027 elections, he described the polls as critical to Nigeria’s democratic future, alleging that opposition parties were being weakened through litigation and internal crises.

He also referenced Peter Obi, alleging that opposition political movements were facing sustained legal challenges.

The NDC chairman further called on civil society organisations, the Nigerian Bar Association, and the media to demand transparency regarding the activities of the Peace Movement Party while urging Nigerians to remain committed to the democratic process.

Commenting on developments in Plateau State, Ndam criticised the administration of Caleb Mutfwang, alleging poor performance in infrastructure, security, agriculture and education. He also claimed that thousands of workers had lost their jobs and expressed concern over the number of internally displaced persons in the state.

He urged Plateau residents to support the NDC, saying the party is committed to building an inclusive society where every citizen has equal opportunities and access to good governance.
