Buratai Hails Late Olubadan as a Pillar of Unity in Nigeria

By Matthew Eloyi

Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai (retd.), has praised the late Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun, as a responsible monarch who leveraged his extensive experience to foster unity in Nigeria.

Speaking at a civic reception organised by the Oyo State Government in Ibadan, Buratai lauded the late monarch’s efforts to unify Ibadanland and the nation.

“The late Olubadan was a detribalized Nigerian who lived to serve humanity, Nigeria, and the people of Ibadanland.

“He did not just accord me respect as an elder statesman, I was also honoured with a chieftaincy title of Aare Akinrogun of Ibadanland. I am proud to be associated with the late Olubadan. He is a responsible king who used his life and time to promote unity and oneness of Nigeria,” Buratai said.

To honour Oba Balogun, the Tukur Foundation, a Non-governmental Organisation, launched a three-day free medical outreach.

Buratai also paid a courtesy visit to the family of another late Olubadan, Oba Saliu Adetunji, where he offered prayers and expressed his condolences. He emphasized the importance of building on the legacies of past leaders while praying for the success of the Olubadan-designate.

Buratai’s entourage included notable figures such as the Olowu of Kuta, Oba Hammed Makama, HRM Adekemi Omorinbola, Major General Bulama Biu (retd.), and several other dignitaries.

The late Olubadan passed away in mid-March at the age of 81, having spent two years on the throne of his ancestors.
