General Musa said one of the three core pillars outlined during his assumption of office is that technology, data, and intelligence must guide Nigeria’s defence planning and military operations. Building on this vision, he stressed that developing indigenous defence manufacturing capacity has become a strategic necessity at this stage of Nigeria’s national security evolution.
According to the Minister, transitioning from dependence on foreign procurement to local production is essential for strengthening the Armed Forces and ensuring sustainable national defence. He identified drone technology as a critical area where local capability will significantly enhance surveillance, intelligence gathering, and rapid response operations.
This policy direction, he explained, informed his recent engagement with the United States during a high-level courtesy visit by Mr. Eric Adams, former Mayor of New York City. The discussions focused on advancing defence collaboration with clear emphasis on technology transfer, capacity building, and local production.
General Musa disclosed that Nigeria is working towards establishing a dedicated defence manufacturing hub capable of producing drones and other military equipment domestically. He noted that such a facility would improve operational effectiveness, boost rapid response capabilities, and substantially reduce Nigeria’s reliance on external procurement, which currently accounts for a significant portion of the defence budget.
He added that the proposed partnership would lay the foundation for a robust, technology-driven defence industrial base, reinforcing national security and safeguarding lives and property across the country.
The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to translating ongoing engagements into tangible outcomes that will strengthen public confidence and contribute to lasting peace, stability, and security in Nigeria and the wider region.
