Activists from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) have staged protests calling on the Catholic Church to publicly denounce bullfighting and sever any perceived ties to the practice.
The demonstrators directed their appeal to Pope Francis, urging the Church to take a clear stance against what they described as a “despicable blood sport.”
PETA, widely regarded as the world’s largest animal rights organisation, advocates against speciesism and campaigns to end animal cruelty across industries including food production, clothing, entertainment, and scientific research.
According to the protesters, any form of blessing or association with bullfighting festivals contradicts Christian values and undermines the Pope’s teachings on environmental stewardship and care for living beings.
The activists argued that condemning bullfighting would align the Church more closely with its moral responsibility to promote compassion and protect all forms of life.
The protest adds to ongoing global debates over the cultural and ethical implications of bullfighting, a tradition that remains controversial in several countries.
