A Georgia court has sentenced 27-year-old Donald Wooten to 60 years in prison after he was convicted of shooting his pregnant girlfriend and leaving her injured at a park in Decatur. Prosecutors said the attack was linked to a dispute over her pregnancy.
According to investigators, the incident occurred at Chapel Hill Park in 2023, where police found the victim with a gunshot wound to the head. She was rushed to hospital and placed in a medically induced coma following the attack. Despite the severity of her injuries, both the woman and her unborn child survived after emergency medical intervention.
Prosecutors said evidence gathered during the investigation, including digital records and text messages, helped establish the case against Wooten. He was later found guilty of attempted murder, attempted feticide and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
The sentencing brings an end to a case that drew significant public attention due to the circumstances surrounding the attack and the survival of both mother and child. Authorities described the case as one highlighting the seriousness of domestic violence-related crimes.
