The Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), Khalil Suleiman Halilu, has said Nigeria must invest in emerging technologies and innovation to prepare its growing youth population for the industries of the future.
Halilu stated this while hosting the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Jumoke Oduwole, at the Sustainable Emerging Technologies Institute (SETI) in Kano.
According to the NASENI boss, projections indicate that Africa will have the world’s largest youth population by 2050, making it imperative for countries on the continent to equip young people with the skills and knowledge required to lead in future technologies.
He noted that Nigeria cannot effectively compete in tomorrow’s industries with outdated infrastructure and systems, stressing the need for deliberate investments in innovation, research and technological development.
Halilu explained that NASENI is establishing the Sustainable Emerging Technologies Institute as part of efforts to bridge the gap between talent, research and industry while creating opportunities for young innovators to thrive.
He said the institute would serve as a platform for developing cutting-edge solutions capable of driving Nigeria’s industrialisation and technological transformation.
The NASENI chief added that the initiative aligns with the agency’s commitment to fostering innovation, supporting local talent and building a sustainable technology ecosystem that can compete globally.
During the visit, discussions focused on strengthening collaboration between government institutions and industry stakeholders to accelerate technological advancement, industrial growth and economic development.
Halilu expressed confidence that SETI would play a critical role in nurturing the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs, positioning Nigeria to take advantage of emerging opportunities in the global technology landscape.
The institute is expected to support research, skills development and innovation-driven projects aimed at advancing Nigeria’s industrial and technological capabilities while contributing to long-term economic growth.
