A video has captured the moment a powerful earthquake struck the Philippines on June 8, 2026, while primary school pupils were participating in a morning flag ceremony.
The footage, recorded at a school in the southern Philippines, shows students and teachers gathered outdoors when the ground suddenly began to shake, forcing the ceremony to come to an abrupt halt as everyone moved to safety. Authorities later confirmed that no injuries were reported at the school, while classes were suspended pending safety inspections.
The earthquake, measured at magnitude 7.8, struck off the coast of Mindanao and was among the strongest to hit the country in recent years. The tremor caused widespread panic, damaged infrastructure and triggered tsunami warnings across parts of the region.
According to emergency officials, multiple buildings collapsed in affected areas, particularly around General Santos City and nearby provinces. Initial reports indicated that at least 19 people were killed and more than 200 others injured, although casualty figures continued to change as rescue operations progressed.
Authorities also reported a series of strong aftershocks following the main quake, prompting evacuations and temporary suspension of classes in several parts of Mindanao.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered emergency response measures and directed government agencies to provide assistance to affected communities as search-and-rescue operations continued.
The Philippines lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world’s most seismically active regions, making earthquakes and volcanic activity a frequent occurrence across the archipelago.
The viral school video has since drawn widespread attention online, highlighting both the frightening impact of the earthquake and the importance of disaster preparedness in vulnerable communities.
