Senate Adopts Key Committee Reports, Receives Fresh Bills from President Tinubu

The Senate, on Thursday, adopted four key committee reports and received two executive bills from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, marking another step in its ongoing legislative agenda aimed at strengthening governance, security, justice and public institutions.

Among the reports considered and adopted during plenary was that of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters on the Legal Practitioners Act (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, 2026 and the Proceeds of Crime Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026, both designed to improve Nigeria’s legal framework and enhance the country’s criminal justice system.

The Senate also adopted the report of the Joint Committee on Establishment and Public Service Matters, Information and National Orientation, and Media and Public Affairs on the Chartered Out-of-Home Media Practitioners of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill, which seeks to regulate and professionalise the outdoor advertising and out-of-home media industry.

Also approved was the report of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs on the 2025 and 2026 budget proposals of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, providing legislative backing for the funding and operational activities of the agency.

In addition, lawmakers adopted the report of the Senate Ad-hoc Committee on the proposed sale of Lafarge Cement Plc to Chinese investors.

Meanwhile, the Senate received two separate communications from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu requesting legislative consideration and passage of new bills.

The first is the National Senior Secondary Education Commission Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which seeks to strengthen the legal framework guiding senior secondary education in Nigeria.

The second is the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015 (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, 2026, aimed at updating Nigeria’s criminal justice administration to improve efficiency, fairness and the speedy dispensation of justice.

The bills are expected to undergo legislative scrutiny before further consideration by the National Assembly.
