Angelina Jolie’s Tattoos: The Spiritual Stories Behind Her Most Private Ink

Angelina Jolie’s tattoos have long attracted attention, particularly the intricate designs across her back, which she rarely reveals in public. Behind the glamorous red-carpet appearances is a collection of tattoos built over decades, many of which carry deeply personal, cultural and spiritual significance.

One of the most recognisable pieces is the large Bengal tiger tattoo on her lower back. Jolie received the tattoo in Bangkok in 2004 from renowned Thai tattoo master Ajarn Noo Kanpai, who used the traditional Sak Yant hand-tapping technique rather than a modern tattoo machine.

The design, known as “Suea Liaw Lang”, or the tiger looking back, is traditionally associated with protection and the removal of bad karma. Jolie has also linked the tattoo to her connection with Cambodia, where she became a citizen and where she adopted her son, Maddox.

Another prominent inscription across her upper back reads “Know Your Rights.” The phrase is the title of a song by British rock band The Clash, a group Jolie has cited as one of her favourites. The tattoo has also been viewed as reflecting her longstanding commitment to human rights advocacy.

On her left shoulder blade is a Buddhist prayer written in Khmer script, dedicated to Maddox. The tattoo replaced an older Japanese character meaning “death” that Jolie had previously covered.

The prayer is traditionally understood as a protective blessing, wishing the recipient safety from enemies, lasting prosperity, beauty and protection wherever they may go.

In 2011, while filming in Cambodia, Jolie reportedly invited Ajarn Noo back to work on another design. The tattoo artist created an original geometric piece for her featuring sacred script associated with protection and spiritual symbolism.

Her collection also includes several traditional Sak Yant designs, including motifs associated with protection, good fortune, personal strength and prosperity.

Together, the tattoos form more than an elaborate collection of body art. They reflect different chapters of Jolie’s life — her connection to Cambodia, her devotion to her children, her interest in spirituality, her love of music and her commitment to humanitarian causes.

Rather than simply being decorative, many of Jolie’s tattoos carry stories of family, identity, protection and personal transformation, making them among the most meaningful celebrity tattoos in popular culture.
