248 Pupils at Kigbe LEA Primary School Face Poor Learning Conditions for Over Eight Years

Kigbe LEA Primary School in Yebu Ward, Kwali Area Council, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has 248 pupils who have endured deplorable learning conditions for more than eight years.

Images and videos from the school show children sitting on bare floors and makeshift wooden planks during lessons.

The classroom floor is visibly damaged, with large patches of exposed earth, while the condition of the walls and other facilities raises concerns about the safety, dignity and well-being of the pupils.

The pupils are said to lack basic learning facilities, including proper desks and chairs, a clean and secure classroom, and adequate ventilation to support effective teaching and learning.

The situation has raised concerns about access to basic education infrastructure in underserved communities, where children continue to pursue their education despite inadequate facilities.

The concerns are particularly serious amid rising temperatures, as poorly maintained classrooms and unsuitable seating arrangements can cause discomfort, fatigue and difficulty concentrating during lessons.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, Senator Ireti Kingibe and the Chairman of Kwali Area Council, Hon. Nuhu Daniel Kwali, are urged to urgently intervene and improve the school’s facilities.

Every child deserves a safe and conducive learning environment, regardless of their location or family circumstances. Education is a fundamental right and should provide children with the opportunity to learn, develop and reach their full potential without enduring undignified conditions.

The school needs urgent attention, including the provision of classroom furniture and repairs to ensure that the pupils have a suitable environment for learning.

With 248 children affected, eight years is far too long for pupils to learn without basic classroom facilities. Education should not come at the cost of a child’s dignity and well-being.
