At least three people have been confirmed dead following a violent attack by suspected bandits on Government Secondary School, Iluke Bunu, in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The incident, which occurred around 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, reportedly threw the community into panic as armed attackers invaded the school premises, allegedly targeting students and residents.
According to the Kogi State Police Command, the attackers arrived in large numbers on about 40 motorcycles. The Command’s spokesperson, ASP Saliu Afusat, said the swift intervention of security operatives prevented what could have been a mass abduction.
He explained that the Divisional Police Officer of Kabba “A” Division immediately mobilised a joint response team comprising police personnel, the Police Mobile Force, tactical units, military operatives, and local vigilantes stationed in the area.
The security forces engaged the attackers in a gun duel, forcing them to flee into nearby forested areas. The police added that there was currently no conclusive evidence of a successful mass abduction, although investigations were ongoing to determine the full circumstances of the attack.
The Command confirmed that three persons lost their lives in the incident. The victims were identified as Mr Ganiyu Anifowose, Vice Principal of UBE Secondary/Primary School, Iluke; Mr Sunday Jacob Alhassan, aged 70; and Sunday Ayele, aged six.
One of the attackers was reportedly neutralised during the exchange of fire, while a member of the joint security team sustained gunshot injuries and is receiving medical attention.
The Commissioner of Police has ordered sustained bush-combing operations and intensified patrols in the area, as security agencies continue efforts to apprehend fleeing suspects.
Residents have been urged to remain calm and provide useful information to assist ongoing investigations and operations.
