Billions, Memories and Legacy: Nigeria’s Power Elite Gather to Honour Gowon

By Matthew Eloyi

Nigeria’s political, military and business elite converged on Abuja on Tuesday in a remarkable celebration of history, leadership and national service as former Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, unveiled his long-awaited autobiography, My Life of Duty and Allegiance.

The event was more than a book launch. It was a gathering steeped in nostalgia, influence and symbolism, drawing some of the country’s most powerful figures under one roof to honour a man widely regarded as one of the most consequential leaders in Nigeria’s post-independence history.

At the centre of the ceremony was an extraordinary show of generosity led by former Minister of Defence, Theophilus Danjuma, who donated N3 billion in support of the autobiography and its legacy projects.

The donation instantly became one of the defining moments of the occasion, underscoring the enduring respect Gowon commands among Nigeria’s old guard and military establishment.

Danjuma, represented by former Chief of Defence Staff, retired General Martin Luther Agwai, also announced that 12 copies of the memoir would be purchased and distributed to the libraries of each of the 20 universities that awarded Gowon honorary doctorate degrees.

The gesture, observers said, reflected a desire not only to celebrate Gowon’s life, but also to preserve his story for future generations of scholars and leaders.

The atmosphere inside the venue carried the aura of a national reunion as senior government officials, diplomats, military officers and captains of industry exchanged pleasantries and reflected on Gowon’s place in Nigeria’s turbulent political history.

Representing President Bola Tinubu at the event, Vice President Kashim Shettima described the autobiography as an important contribution to the nation’s historical record and democratic journey.

Nigeria’s richest businessman, Aliko Dangote, added glamour to the ceremony with a N500 million donation in support of the launch, while billionaire industrialist Abdul Samad Rabiu purchased copies of the book worth N25 million.

The autobiography, spanning 20 chapters, chronicles Gowon’s early life, rise through the military ranks, stewardship during Nigeria’s civil war era and decades of public service after leaving office.

In a thoughtful review of the memoir, Matthew Kukah reflected on the lessons embedded in Gowon’s life story, describing the book as both a personal account and a window into Nigeria’s evolving national identity.

For many attendees, the unveiling of My Life of Duty and Allegiance was not merely about revisiting the past. It was also about preserving a chapter of Nigerian history shaped by war, reconciliation, leadership and national unity.

As applause echoed through the hall and copies of the memoir exchanged hands, the event served as a reminder that, decades after leaving power, Gowon remains a towering figure whose story continues to resonate across generations.
