In a groundbreaking move to celebrate Nigeria’s Democracy Day, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, is set to host a thrilling three-day Democracy Day Basketball Championship. The event, slated for June 9-12, 2024, will take place in Abuja, marking a significant contribution by the CDS towards promoting national unity and peace through sports.

Speaking at a press briefing held today at the Organisation of Military Sports in Africa (OSMA) Office in Abuja, Brigadier General Aliyu Abdullahi (retired), Chairman of the Organizing Committee, emphasized the championship’s alignment with General Musa’s non-kinetic approach to fostering peace and enhancing national security. “This basketball championship is a unique initiative that underscores the importance of sports in uniting different segments of society, including security agencies, youth, and basketball academies,” Abdullahi stated.

The event promises to be a historic first, featuring inclusive participation from various groups. Retired General Aliyu highlighted that the competition is designed not only to showcase athletic talent but also to promote sportsmanship, cooperation, and collaboration between security personnel and the civilian population. “It’s about creating a fun and active environment for everyone, especially the youth, to keep them engaged and steer them away from negative influences,” he added.

With over 40 veterans, 270 basketball players, and numerous officials expected to participate, the championship is set to be a significant sporting event. Winners will be rewarded with trophies and cash prizes, adding a competitive edge to the festivities.

The press briefing saw attendance from prominent figures, including OSMA President Major General Maikano Abdullahi, Director of Sports at the Defence Headquarters Air Vice Marshal AT Marquis, and several senior officers. Their presence underscored the importance of the event in fostering a spirit of camaraderie and national pride.

As Nigeria gears up to celebrate its Democracy Day, the CDS’s initiative promises to bring a sense of unity and joy to the heart of the nation through the universal language of sports.
