Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), has emphasised the crucial need for collaborative efforts among key stakeholders in South East Nigeria to bring an end to the unjust sit-at-home order.

During his operational visit to the 14 Brigade Nigerian Army at Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (GEJ) Barracks in Ohafia, Abia State, on Wednesday, COAS Lagbaja highlighted the positive impact such cooperation could have in restoring the region to normalcy.

COAS Lagbaja expressed gratitude to the Abia State Government for the substantial support received by the Nigerian Army (NA) in the state. He assured that the NA, under his leadership, would continue to collaborate with the state government and the people of Abia to address security challenges and maintain peace.

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State commended the efforts of NA troops and other security agencies in reducing insurgency in the state and the broader South Eastern region. He particularly praised the effectiveness of Operation CRUSH, noting the relative calm at identified flashpoints.

During his visit to the 14 Brigade Headquarters in Ohafia, COAS Lagbaja urged the troops to prioritise restoring peace in troubled areas. He stressed that this task was essential for rebuilding public confidence, allowing citizens to engage in their normal activities without fear.

COAS Lagbaja pledged that the ongoing infrastructural development in NA formations would extend to GEJ Barracks. He urged the troops to maintain their commitment to operational tasks, loyalty to the President and the Constitution, and adherence to global best practices and rules of engagement.

In a statement, COAS Lagbaja said, “Troops must adhere to extant rules of engagement, respect the fundamental human rights of the citizenry, and above all, conduct themselves professionally in line with global best practices.”

The COAS also hinted at the significant support from the Federal Government and reassured the troops of the prioritisation of their welfare under his watch.
