DHQ Inaugurates Court Martial for 36 Military Personnel Over Alleged Mutiny

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has inaugurated a General Court Martial to try 36 serving military personnel over allegations of mutiny aimed at overthrowing the government.

The development follows an earlier statement issued by the DHQ on January 26, 2026, addressing the matter.

In a statement on Friday, the DHQ described the inauguration as a significant step toward reinforcing discipline, accountability, and the Armed Forces’ commitment to safeguarding national integrity and constituted authority.

According to the statement, proceedings of the court martial will be conducted in line with the highest standards of fairness and impartiality, with strict adherence to due process.

“All cases will be handled within the extant legal frameworks of the military justice system, ensuring that justice is served without fear or favour,” the statement noted.

The DHQ further reiterated its commitment to upholding professionalism, discipline, and the rule of law, while also ensuring that the rights of all personnel are respected and the principles of fair hearing are upheld throughout the trial process.

The statement was signed by Major General Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information.
