DHQ Launches Skill Acquisition Programme for Military Veterans in North Central

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare and post-service well-being of retired personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria with the commencement of the Skill Acquisition Training for Veterans (SAT-V) for the North Central Geopolitical Zone and the Federal Capital Territory.

The four-day training programme, which runs from July 14 to 17, 2026, is taking place at the Headquarters 22 Brigade, Sobi Cantonment, Ilorin, Kwara State, and is organised by the Veterans Affairs Directorate of the Defence Headquarters.

The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts by the Armed Forces of Nigeria to strengthen the economic resilience and self-reliance of military veterans through vocational and entrepreneurial training.

Declaring the programme open, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, described the initiative as a strategic investment in the welfare of retired military personnel and a demonstration of the Armed Forces’ enduring commitment to those who served the nation.

The CDS said the theme of the training, “Enhancing Veterans’ Capacity Building through Sustained Skill Acquisition Training for Enhanced National Development,” reflects the importance of empowering veterans to remain productive contributors to Nigeria’s socio-economic development.

According to him, the programme aligns with his leadership philosophy, which places priority on improved personnel welfare and sound administration.

General Oluyede urged participants to maximise the opportunity by embracing the practical knowledge and technical skills provided during the training, noting that the competencies acquired would enhance their livelihoods while contributing to national development.

The Chief of Defence Staff was represented at the opening ceremony by the Director of Veterans Affairs, Major General O.D. Williams.

The Skill Acquisition Training for Veterans (SAT-V) is designed to equip retired military personnel with entrepreneurial and vocational skills that will enable them to establish sustainable businesses and generate alternative sources of income after active service.
