FG, Lufthansa Group Move to Strengthen Nigeria-Germany Aviation Relations

The Federal Government has commenced discussions with the Lufthansa Group on strengthening aviation relations between Nigeria and Germany, including plans to review and ratify the existing Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA).

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, disclosed this after receiving a delegation from the Lufthansa Group at his office in Abuja.

The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation between both countries, updating the existing BASA and exploring opportunities for the German aviation group to further expand its operations in Nigeria.

The delegation comprised Alexandra Dietzen-Zill, Senior Manager, Aeropolitical Relations and Traffic Rights, Lufthansa Group, and Walid Mahmud, Sales Executive, Lufthansa Technik, Aero Alzey.

A major issue discussed was the BASA between Nigeria and Germany, which was signed in 2010. Keyamo said both sides agreed that the agreement requires ratification and updating to reflect current developments and the evolving aviation relationship between the two countries.

According to the Minister, modalities were agreed upon to commence the review process immediately.

The proposed update is expected to provide a more current framework for air connectivity and strengthen cooperation between Nigeria and Germany in the aviation sector.

Keyamo also expressed Nigeria’s readiness to deepen engagement with international aviation partners as the Federal Government continues efforts to position the country as a stronger regional aviation hub.
