Organised Labour, comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), has announced plans to begin negotiations for a new national minimum wage in July 2026.
The decision was disclosed at a joint press conference on the sidelines of the 114th International Labour Conference held in Geneva, Switzerland.
According to labour representatives, the current minimum wage of ₦70,000 is no longer sufficient to meet the basic needs of Nigerian workers, stressing the urgency of reviewing the wage structure in line with prevailing economic realities.
While acknowledging that state governors have recognised the inadequacy of the existing wage, the unions urged caution in determining a new figure, insisting that due process must be followed to ensure a fair and sustainable outcome.
Organised Labour also commended the Federal Government for restoring the payment of gratuities to retirees, describing it as a positive step towards improving workers’ welfare. However, they called for the prompt settlement of outstanding arrears owed to beneficiaries.
The unions reiterated their commitment to constructive engagement with government and employers to arrive at a realistic and mutually acceptable new wage structure through dialogue.
