The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has pledged to intensify efforts to combat terrorists and their collaborators amid a surge in attacks in Borno State.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, DHQ spokesman Major General Edward Buba attributed the renewed violence in the North-East to the activities of foreign agents bolstering terrorist groups in the region.
“The resurgence is being fueled by external actors and compounded by local collaborators leaking sensitive information, such as troops’ movements,” he said.
General Buba assured Nigerians that the military remains resolute in its mission to eliminate terrorism and restore peace across the country.
“We are committed to dismantling these networks of terror and ensuring a safe and secure Nigeria,” he added.
In a recent ambush by Boko Haram insurgents in Baga, near Lake Chad, several soldiers were killed, while an unspecified number remain missing.
The troops were reportedly attempting to recover the bodies of 40 civilians killed earlier by the insurgents when they were attacked.
Additionally, terrorists affiliated with the Islamic State group launched a separate raid on a military base in Borno days ago, killing six soldiers.
The Defence Headquarters reiterated its determination to neutralise the threats and prevent further loss of lives, emphasising the need for vigilance and cooperation from the public.
