NFIU Signs Strategic Agreements With Four Countries to Strengthen Global Fight Against Financial Crimes
The Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) has signed a series of strategic Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with Financial Intelligence Units (FIUs) from four countries as part of efforts to strengthen international cooperation against money laundering, terrorism financing and other illicit financial crimes.
The agreements were signed on the sidelines of the ongoing Egmont Group Plenary in Baku, Azerbaijan, where the NFIU delegation is led by its Chief Executive Officer, Hafsat Abubakar Bakari.
The MoUs were concluded with the Financial Intelligence Units of Timor-Leste, represented by Maria Jose de Jesus Sarmento; the Cayman Islands, represented by RJ Berry; the Vatican City, represented by Frederico Antellini Russo; and Namibia, represented by Dr. Bryan Eiseb and Zenobia Barry.
According to the NFIU, the agreements are aimed at enhancing intelligence sharing, strengthening operational collaboration and expanding Nigeria’s global network in combating money laundering, terrorist financing, proliferation financing, corruption and other illicit financial flows.
The agency noted that the partnerships will improve information exchange between participating jurisdictions, enabling authorities to more effectively identify, investigate and disrupt transnational criminal networks.
The NFIU said the collaboration reflects Nigeria’s commitment to working with international partners to safeguard the integrity of the global financial system.
It added that in an increasingly interconnected world, where financial crimes often transcend national borders, stronger cooperation among Financial Intelligence Units remains critical to detecting, preventing and prosecuting illicit financial activities.
The Egmont Group is an international network of Financial Intelligence Units established to promote cooperation and the secure exchange of financial intelligence in the global fight against money laundering, terrorism financing and related financial crimes.
