NHIA, FRSC Move to Strengthen Emergency Healthcare Access for Road Crash Victims

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) are exploring a strategic partnership aimed at improving emergency healthcare access for road traffic crash victims across Nigeria.

The proposal was presented by the Director-General of NHIA, Dr. Kelechi Ohiri, during a courtesy visit to the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, in Abuja.

Dr. Ohiri said the collaboration would focus on integrating health insurance information into driver’s licence and vehicle registration processes to enable emergency responders and healthcare providers quickly determine the insurance status of crash victims.

According to him, the initiative would eliminate bureaucratic delays often associated with accessing emergency medical services and ensure that accident victims receive prompt treatment without financial barriers at the point of rescue.

He explained that the proposed system would facilitate faster identification of insured individuals and improve access to life-saving healthcare interventions following road traffic crashes.

Responding, the Corps Marshal welcomed the proposal and praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing Dr. Ohiri as NHIA Director-General, describing him as “a round peg in a round hole.”

Mohammed reaffirmed the FRSC’s commitment to initiatives that promote the safety and welfare of road users, noting that the Corps remains dedicated to improving emergency response and healthcare access across the country’s transport sector.

He disclosed that all FRSC clinics nationwide are accredited healthcare facilities and revealed that the Corps established FRSC Health Maintenance Limited to expand affordable healthcare coverage to transport operators, drivers, and members of road transport unions.

According to him, the target population for the programme exceeds 10 million people nationwide.

The Corps Marshal further revealed that the FRSC maintains a database of more than 12 million registered drivers and expressed the agency’s readiness to work with NHIA to make health insurance enrolment a component of driver’s licence acquisition and renewal processes.

He said such a partnership would improve road safety outcomes, enhance emergency medical care, and ensure crash victims receive prompt treatment regardless of their financial circumstances.

Mohammed also indicated the Corps’ willingness to support the inclusion of National Health Insurance information in passenger manifests and other transport-related documentation to strengthen emergency response systems and healthcare delivery within the road transport sector.

Highlighting the FRSC’s contributions to post-crash care, the Corps Marshal noted that the agency was the first organisation in Nigeria to establish a dedicated ambulance service and roadside clinics located along major accident-prone routes across the country.

He said the initiative reflects the Corps’ longstanding commitment to saving lives and improving outcomes for road users involved in traffic crashes.

The proposed collaboration is expected to deepen healthcare coverage within the transport sector while supporting ongoing efforts to expand access to emergency medical services and health insurance nationwide.
