Niger First Lady Commissions Remodelled Wards at General Hospital Minna

The First Lady of Niger State, Hajiya Fatima Mohammed Bago, has commissioned newly remodelled facilities at the General Hospital, Minna, describing the project as a significant milestone in the state government’s efforts to improve access to quality, dignified and responsive healthcare.

The newly remodelled facilities include the Male Surgical Ward, Male Medical Ward, Female Surgical Ward, Female Medical Ward, Emergency Paediatric Unit and Paediatric Surgical Ward.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on August 2, 2026, Hajiya Fatima Bago said the development represents an investment in the lives, wellbeing and future of the people of Niger State.

She attributed the transformation at the hospital to the commitment of Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago and his administration’s decision to declare a state of emergency in the facility.

According to her, the improvements demonstrate the government’s determination to place healthcare at the centre of the New Niger Agenda.

“Every investment in healthcare is ultimately an investment in human life, family wellbeing and the future of our society,” she said.

Focus on Women and Children’s Healthcare

The First Lady expressed particular satisfaction with the newly remodelled Emergency Paediatric Unit and Paediatric Surgical Ward, stressing the importance of providing children with timely and quality medical care.

She noted that every child deserves access to quality healthcare, while women should receive safe and dignified care throughout their healthcare journey.

Hajiya Fatima Bago also called for greater emphasis on preventive healthcare, including routine immunisation, proper nutrition, sanitation, health education, disease surveillance and regular medical screening.

She particularly urged increased public awareness on cancer and other diseases where early detection and timely treatment can significantly improve outcomes.

Hospital Targeted for 500-Bed Referral Facility

The First Lady expressed optimism about the broader plans to transform General Hospital, Minna, into a modern 500-bed referral hospital equipped with advanced diagnostic facilities, improved emergency services, modern theatres and other critical infrastructure.

She described the planned expansion as evidence of a long-term vision to build a stronger and more responsive healthcare system capable of meeting the needs of present and future generations.

Call for Professional Service and Facility Maintenance

Hajiya Fatima Bago commended healthcare professionals for their dedication and urged them to complement the improved infrastructure with professionalism, compassion and quality service delivery.

She also acknowledged the contributions of the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Murtala Muhammad Bagana, the Permanent Secretary, hospital management and staff, the Special Supervisory Committee, contractors, development partners and other stakeholders involved in the remodelling project.

The First Lady appealed to healthcare workers, patients and members of the public to protect and maintain the facilities, stressing that the infrastructure belongs to the people of Niger State and must be preserved for future generations.

Following the commissioning, Hajiya Fatima Bago toured the hospital alongside the Commissioner for Health, members of her entourage and other dignitaries. She inspected the remodelled wards and other sections of the facility and received briefings on the improvements and services being provided.

She thereafter reaffirmed her commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of women, children, families and communities across Niger State.
