Nigeria Moves to Improve Digital Addressing System With New National Postcode Initiative
The Federal Government has launched the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s digital infrastructure, improve service delivery and support economic growth.
The initiative is aimed at providing every home, business, school and community in the country with a unique and reliable digital address, making it easier for emergency responders, logistics companies, financial institutions and government agencies to locate people and places.
Speaking at the launch, stakeholders noted that Nigeria’s challenge is not the absence of addresses but the need for a modern digital addressing system that supports today’s technology-driven economy.
They observed that while many Nigerians still rely on landmarks and verbal descriptions such as “opposite the church” or “after the filling station” to describe locations, such methods are no longer adequate in an era of e-commerce, digital banking, artificial intelligence and smart city development.
According to participants, an effective digital postcode system will improve emergency response, speed up deliveries, strengthen business operations, enhance customer verification and promote innovation across various sectors.
The launch brought together key government officials, including the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Works, representatives of the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, and the Postmaster-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), Tola Odeyemi.
Stakeholders described the initiative as a critical step toward building a more connected and globally competitive Nigeria, stressing that reliable digital addressing is essential infrastructure for economic development and digital transformation.
They expressed confidence that the new postcode system would improve access to opportunities by making locations easier to identify, verify and reach across the country.
