Nigeria Reaffirms Global Peace Commitment as CDS Musa Honours UN Peacekeepers

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, has reiterated Nigeria’s unwavering dedication to global peace and multilateral cooperation at the 2025 International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers commemoration.

In a statement issued by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, and shared with journalists in Abuja on Wednesday, General Musa described the event as a solemn moment to reflect on the heroism of those who serve under the UN flag.

“The International Day of UN Peacekeepers is not merely ceremonial,” General Musa stated.

“It is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by those who have dedicated their lives to the noble cause of global peace and security. It also reaffirms our shared commitment to the ideals upon which the United Nations was founded.”

This year’s theme, “Fit for the Future, Building Better Together,” aligns seamlessly with Nigeria’s longstanding peacekeeping philosophy, the CDS emphasised.

He pointed out that contemporary global threats, from terrorism to pandemics, require joint action, unity, and respect for the UN Charter.

“Nigeria has remained a steadfast contributor to UN peacekeeping efforts since independence,” he said.

“Our troops have served with honour and distinction in numerous conflict zones, earning Nigeria a respected position as one of Africa’s leading contributors to UN missions.”

General Musa also commended the professionalism and resilience of Nigerian peacekeepers deployed across various missions as observers, mediators, commanders, and contingents.

He noted that the Armed Forces of Nigeria, under his leadership, are continually evolving to respond to emerging global threats with a people-centric and constitutionally grounded approach.

He reaffirmed the military’s continued partnership with the United Nations, not just in peacekeeping but also in areas such as disaster response, civil-military cooperation, and sustainable development.

General Musa extended deep appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his unwavering support to the Armed Forces and paid tribute to Nigerian peacekeepers who made the ultimate sacrifice.

“We salute their courage and honour their legacy,” he said.

“Their sacrifices have laid the foundation for a more peaceful and secure world.”
