NSSF, Obetek Technologies Launch National Shooting Sport Platform in Abuja

The Nigeria Shooting Sport Federation (NSSF), in partnership with Obetek Technologies, has launched the National Integrated Shooting Sport Platform (NISSP) as part of efforts to promote shooting as a regulated sport and strengthen safety, skills and firearms accountability in Nigeria.

The platform was launched during the Army War College Nigeria Course 10/2026 Shooting Competition in Abuja, which brought together military and para-military personnel, sports journalists, associations and other stakeholders.

Speaking as Special Guest of Honour, the Commandant of the National Defence College (NDC), Rear Admiral Abdullahi Ahmed, said the initiative would enhance participants’ awareness, precision and proficiency in shooting.

He described shooting as an important traditional military sport, particularly at a time when the country is confronting insurgency and other security challenges.

The NDC Commandant urged participants to sustain regular practice beyond the competition, stressing that continuous training was essential to perfecting shooting skills and improving accuracy.

Ahmed also described the partnership between the NSSF and the military as a viable initiative, noting that while the military had collaborated in sports such as volleyball, basketball and football, shooting provided an important area for cooperation given the Federation’s expertise and resources.

NSSF officials said the competition was organised as a novelty shooting match for participants of the Army War College course, providing an opportunity for them to demonstrate their skills while maintaining physical and mental fitness.

The Federation explained that the partnership and NISSP would also support responsible firearms management by creating a database of legitimate shooting sport participants and ensuring that firearm owners involved in the sport are properly registered and vetted in accordance with existing laws.

According to the NSSF, it is working with the Nigeria Police Force, whose Inspector-General of Police serves as the Federation’s Grand Patron, to ensure that its activities comply with relevant laws and established safety requirements.

The Federation encouraged Nigerians interested in shooting sports to register through the NISSP and access professional coaching, stressing that shooting sport promotes discipline, concentration, precision and responsible firearms handling, rather than indiscriminate use of firearms.

NSSF said the NISSP would provide a structured platform for identifying, registering and developing shooting enthusiasts and professionals, while supporting firearms accountability and contributing to national security.

The Federation also encouraged members of the public, including those in rural communities, to utilise available digital platforms to register and access legitimate shooting sport opportunities.
