Ondo Government Withholds WASSCE Results, Expels 17 Students Over Unruly Sign-Out Celebrations
The Ondo State Government has sanctioned 17 graduating secondary school students for engaging in what it described as unruly and unacceptable conduct during sign-out celebrations in Akure.
The affected students, drawn from Oyemekun Grammar School, Aquinas Secondary School and CAC Grammar School, were reportedly expelled and had their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results and testimonials withheld following investigations into the incident.
According to the Ondo State Ministry of Education, the disciplinary action followed the circulation of a viral video showing the students engaging in disorderly behaviour, including tearing their school uniforms, chanting slogans and participating in activities considered contrary to the values expected of students.
The ministry stated that the decision was taken to maintain discipline in public secondary schools and to serve as a deterrent to other students who may be tempted to engage in similar acts.
Education officials stressed that while graduation celebrations are acceptable, students must conduct themselves responsibly and in a manner that upholds the image of their schools and the state’s education system.
The government reiterated its commitment to promoting discipline, moral values and academic excellence in schools across the state, warning that any conduct capable of disrupting public order or bringing institutions into disrepute would attract appropriate sanctions.
The incident has generated public reactions, with some supporting the government’s stance on discipline, while others have called for a more lenient approach toward the affected students.
