Police Arrest Man Behind AI-Generated Audio Falsely Attributed to President Tinubu

The Nigeria Police Force has arrested Ifechukwu Dennis, the man identified as the creator of an artificial intelligence-generated voice note that was widely circulated online and falsely presented as a leaked recording of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The arrest brings to a close a week-long controversy that began on May 27, 2026, following the circulation of a viral video involving social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan.

According to police authorities, investigations traced the origin of the controversial audio recording to Dennis, who allegedly used artificial intelligence technology to generate a voice simulation that was subsequently shared across various social media platforms.

The voice note was widely circulated online and was falsely portrayed as a confidential recording of President Tinubu, sparking public debate and generating significant reactions on social media.

Security sources said digital forensic investigations were launched after concerns emerged over the authenticity of the recording. The probe reportedly led investigators to the suspected creator of the audio file.

The police have not yet disclosed the specific charges that may be filed against the suspect, but officials indicated that investigations are ongoing to determine the extent of his involvement and whether other individuals participated in the creation or dissemination of the recording.

The incident has renewed concerns about the growing use of artificial intelligence tools to create deceptive content, including deepfake audio and videos capable of impersonating public figures.

Experts have warned that AI-generated misinformation poses increasing challenges for governments, media organizations, and the public, particularly as technology continues to evolve and become more accessible.

The Nigeria Police Force urged citizens to verify the authenticity of sensitive content before sharing it online and cautioned against the use of emerging technologies to spread false information capable of causing public confusion or undermining national security.

Further details are expected as investigations continue and authorities provide updates on the case.
