New research suggests that keeping bedroom temperatures slightly cooler during sleep could offer surprising health benefits, including improved metabolism and better sleep quality. Scientists say cooler conditions may activate brown fat — a type of body fat that burns calories to generate heat — gently increasing energy use while the body rests.

Experts also note that a cool sleeping environment supports the regulation of melatonin, the hormone responsible for deep sleep, recovery, and cellular repair. Proper melatonin production is closely linked to healthy aging and overall well-being.

Beyond metabolic effects, cooler sleep temperatures have been associated with improved sleep quality and fewer nighttime awakenings. Researchers say sleeping in a cool room may also help balance hormones such as insulin, reduce inflammation, lower stress on the body, and allow the brain and body to enter deeper, more restorative sleep cycles.

While scientists caution that a cold room is not a cure-all, evidence suggests that maintaining a bedroom temperature between 60 and 67 degrees Fahrenheit (16–19°C) could support better sleep, metabolic health, and long-term wellness. The findings highlight how small environmental changes — even during sleep — may play a role in improving overall health.
