South Africa captain Ronwen Williams has expressed disappointment over what he described as a lack of support from fellow Africans following Bafana Bafana’s defeat to Mexico in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking after South Africa’s 2-0 loss to tournament co-hosts Mexico, Williams said he was saddened to see many African football fans backing the host nation instead of supporting a fellow African team.
“Africans have always supported other African countries in every World Cup tournament, but I can’t figure out why our own case is different,” Williams said.
“Many Africans supported Mexico, not us, the South Africans. We almost shed tears, but it’s truly sad. As Africans, let’s stand for each other, let’s stand together.”
The remarks came after South Africa suffered a disappointing start to their World Cup campaign, losing 2-0 to Mexico at the iconic Estadio Azteca in the tournament’s opening match.
Williams’ comments have since sparked widespread debate across social media, with football fans from different African countries expressing varying opinions on continental solidarity during international tournaments. Some supporters agreed with his call for African unity, while others pointed to past tensions involving African migrants in South Africa as a reason for their divided loyalties.
Despite the setback, the South African captain urged his teammates not to lose hope, stressing that Bafana Bafana still have two group-stage matches remaining and a chance to fight for qualification to the knockout stage.
South Africa, making their first World Cup appearance since hosting the tournament in 2010, will now look to bounce back in their remaining Group A fixtures as they seek to keep their World Cup hopes alive.
