Supermodel and television personality Tyra Banks has filed a defamation lawsuit against against netflix.com over its documentary series, Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model, alleging that the production misrepresented her through selective editing and omitted key context from her interviews.
According to court filings, Banks claims she participated in the documentary to openly discuss both the successes and controversies surrounding America’s Next Top Model (ANTM). However, she alleges that only about 16 minutes of her more than three-hour interview were included in the final production, creating what she describes as a “false and defamatory narrative.”
The lawsuit reportedly challenges the documentary’s portrayal of Banks in relation to allegations made by former contestant Shandi Sullivan, who claimed she was sexually assaulted during the show’s production. Banks argues that the series falsely suggested she knowingly allowed misconduct to occur and later failed to recall the incident when questioned.
Banks also disputes claims regarding her relationship with former ANTM judge J. Alexander, popularly known as Miss J, and alleges that important information and context were omitted from the documentary.
The lawsuit names Netflix and the documentary’s producers and seeks damages for alleged reputational harm, emotional distress and lost business opportunities. Banks is also seeking a jury trial.
Neither Netflix nor the documentary’s producers had publicly commented on the lawsuit at the time of reporting.
