South African Authorities Seize Drugs Worth Nearly R1 Billion at Beitbridge Border, Arrest Three

South African border authorities have intercepted 713 kilograms of methaqualone, the primary chemical used in the production of mandrax tablets, in a major anti-drug operation at the Beitbridge Border Post.

The seizure, which officials described as one of the largest drug busts in the country’s history, occurred on May 27, 2026, after Border Management Authority (BMA) officials stopped and inspected a truck travelling from Malawi through Zimbabwe into South Africa.

According to authorities, a routine cargo scan raised suspicion about the contents of the vehicle, prompting an extensive search operation.

Officials spent nearly eight hours dismantling the truck before discovering the concealed consignment of methaqualone. The seized drugs have an estimated street value of almost R1 billion, equivalent to about $60 million.

Three Malawian nationals were arrested at the scene and subsequently transferred to Musina Police Station for further investigation.

Specialised units, including members of the Hawks and K9 teams, were deployed to support the operation, while investigations continue to uncover the wider criminal network linked to the shipment.

South Africa’s Leon Schreiber described the operation as a significant breakthrough in the country’s fight against drug trafficking and organised crime.

Authorities revealed that the truck had been identified before reaching the border through intelligence gathered by the Border Management Authority’s National Targeting Centre. The intelligence was later confirmed through technological screening systems, leading officials to carry out the detailed inspection that uncovered the illicit cargo.

Security experts note that drug trafficking remains a major challenge across the continent, often serving as a source of funding for organised criminal networks involved in various transnational crimes.

Officials said the seizure demonstrates the importance of combining intelligence gathering, technology and effective border enforcement in combating illicit trafficking and protecting regional security.

Investigations are ongoing as authorities work to identify other individuals and groups connected to the shipment.
