Government institutions, security agencies, international partners and development organisations have reaffirmed the need for stronger collaboration to tackle organised crime in Nigeria.
The stakeholders made the commitment during the Validation Exercise of the National Strategy on Combating Organised Crime in Nigeria, organised by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Abuja.
Speaking at the event, the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), Hafsat Abubakar Bakari, said combating organised crime requires more than law enforcement, stressing that effective coordination, intelligence gathering and collective action remain critical.
She highlighted the role of financial intelligence in disrupting criminal networks involved in terrorism financing, cybercrime, human trafficking, kidnapping, corruption, illegal mining and other forms of organised crime.
According to her, financial intelligence has become one of Nigeria’s most effective tools for identifying illicit financial flows, exposing criminal facilitators and supporting law enforcement agencies in their investigations.
Bakari also highlighted the establishment of the NFIU’s Serious Organised Crimes Department in 2024, describing it as a key initiative aimed at strengthening intelligence-led responses to organised crime across the country.
Other speakers at the event, including representatives of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the Nigerian Intelligence and Security Studies (NISS) and the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), underscored the importance of enhanced inter-agency collaboration, intelligence sharing and international cooperation in addressing emerging organised crime threats.
The validation exercise concluded with stakeholders reaffirming their commitment to implementing a coordinated national strategy aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture, governance and economic resilience in the fight against organised crime.
