Tension Rises in Anambra as Protesters Threaten Shutdown Over Continued Closure of Onitsha Main Market

Tension is mounting across Anambra State following protests over the continued closure of the Onitsha Main Market, with demonstrators warning of a statewide shutdown of key services if Governor Chukwuma Soludo fails to heed calls to reopen the commercial hub.

Protest leaders accused the state government of ignoring the “voice of the people,” describing the prolonged closure as detrimental to livelihoods and economic activities. They warned that banks, schools, hospitals, churches, and transport companies could be forced to shut down in the coming days if their demands are not met.

According to the protesters, changing the leadership of the Main Market alone will not resolve the crisis, insisting that meaningful engagement and the reopening of the market remain their primary demands.

“Even if the chairman of the Main Market is changed, the voice of the people must prevail,” one protester said.

In a further development, demonstrators reportedly moved their protest to the Onitsha Head Bridge, leading to severe traffic congestion and very slow vehicular movement in the area, disrupting daily activities and commuter flow.

Residents and business owners have expressed concern over the escalating situation, calling for dialogue and peaceful resolution to avert wider disruption across the state.

As of the time of filing this report, the Anambra State Government has yet to issue an official response to the latest developments.
