This silent academic drift threatens the very foundation of scholarly integrity. As institutions grapple with the implications of AI‑assisted misconduct, the question becomes urgent—how do we safeguard academic credibility in an era where machines can write, reason, and replicate human intellectual labour?

This article interrogates the evolving challenge, contextualises it within African higher education, and proposes assertive, actionable pathways for universities, regulators, and academic leaders. Artificial intelligence has democratised access to knowledge creation. Tools such as generative language models, automated research assistants, and AI‑powered writing platforms have become ubiquitous. While these technologies offer unprecedented support for learning, they also enable students to bypass intellectual effort.
The traditional forms of plagiarism — copying text, outsourcing assignments, or recycling previous work—now pale in comparison to AI‑generated submissions that are original, undetectable, and stylistically tailored. This evolution presents a profound challenge: academic dishonesty is no longer a matter of copying; it is a matter of outsourcing cognition.
African universities, many of which are still strengthening their digital governance frameworks, face heightened vulnerability. Without robust policies, detection systems, and ethical education, institutions risk graduating students whose competencies have not been genuinely tested.
